You Were Never Really Here Movie Review

Joaquin Phoenix stars in You Were Never Really Here

Hammer Away

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A traumatized veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening. Directed by Lynne Ramsay.

You Were Never Really Here... an Americanized Korean revenge film with a soul. A troubled soul mind you, but one that begs for closer examination, a task expertly carried out by Phoenix & Ramsay. Be warned, the movie features a generous (pun intended) dose of unapologetic violence; but its lead player demonstrates remarkable depth and straightforwardness, amidst his ruthless maneuvers and troublesome flashbacks. Phoenix's performance is award-worthy, a dynamic combination of physical prowess and steely resolve, balanced by moments of calm. It's not easy to watch, but Ramsay holds back just enough to make it possible (and worth the effort.)

Grade: B
