Thor: Ragnarok Movie Review

Tessa Thompson & Chris Hemsworth (r) star in Thor: Ragnarok

Point Break

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: In Marvel Studios' "Thor: Ragnarok," Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok (the destruction of his home world and the end of Asgardian civilization) at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett.) But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger, the Incredible Hulk! Directed by Taika Waititi.

Hemsworth channels his inner Ron Burgundy (to near perfection) in Thor: Ragnarok, the 17th and latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's basically The Fifth Element meets Guardians of the Galaxy with better known superheroes. That's not necessarily a bad thing... in moderation; but Waititi proves incapable of knowing when to say when. Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Jeff Goldblum are terrific (Blanchett too, for a while) but it's cheeky to a fault, with too many preposterous/repetitive battle scenes and superfluous characters (a monster dog, really?) Maybe Marvel should "come back to Earth" and dial it down a notch?

Grade: B-
