The Lego Ninjago Movie Review

Justin Theroux voices Lord Garmadon in The Lego Ninjago Movie

Duck and Cover

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: In this big-screen NINJAGO adventure, the battle for NINJAGO City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, AKA the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, The Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd's dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their inner power of Spinjitzu. Directed by Charlie Bean, Paul Fisher and Bob Logan.

It takes a trio of directors to threaten the legacy that was The Lego Movie franchise. What went wrong? Look no further than a noticeable lack of recognizable characters, and the actors who voice them. We're advised, "You have to look at it from a different point of view," but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's still laughs to be had (Dave Franco's Llyod, Justin Theroux's Lord Garmadon) but they're fewer and farther between. Perhaps two films in one year was a bit too ambitious. Let's hope the next one goes back to the basics (ahem, Wonder Woman?)
