Dunkirk Movie Review

Fionn Whitehead stars in Dunkirk

Hoping for Deliverance

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Acclaimed auteur Christopher Nolan directs this World War II thriller about the evacuation of Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces can take hold. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance co-star, with longtime Nolan collaborator Hans Zimmer providing the score.

A good movie should have a beginning, middle and end. Nolan's Dunkirk takes place near the very end of the Battle of Dunkirk with little to no backstory or character development. The enemy goes unseen (save for a few aircraft) but one thing's for sure... the good guys (the British) have nowhere to hide, and time is running out. Cue the horrors of war, expertly detailed by Nolan, against Zimmer's haunting soundtrack. Unfortunately, it's hard to follow (accents, aerial footage) with nameless characters you know nothing about. Surprisingly long for 106 minutes, not to mention depressing and (after Interstellar) disappointing.

Grade: C
