Baby Driver Movie Review

Lily James & Ansel Elgort (r) star in Baby Driver

Burn Baby Burn!

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom. Directed by Edgar Wright.

Elgort plays "a good kid, and a devil behind the wheel" in the fast-paced frantic Baby Driver. It wants to be like Drive, only much faster and void of subtlety. What a shame, given Elgort's opposite persona, and subsequent dynamic performance. I loved the music angle (lip syncing, multiple iPods) but Wright overdoes it... a common theme, repeated by most of his players, half of whom spend all day trying to act cool/tough. Lots of (perhaps too much) action, but I guarantee you won't be bored. Great for the ADHD crowd, and pretty good for the rest of us.

Grade: B-
