Colossal Movie Review

Jason Sudeikis & Anne Hathaway (r) star in Colossal

Thug Life?

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an out-of-work party girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world. Co-stars Jason Sudeikis and Tim Blake Nelson. Directed by Nacho Vigalondo.

Sudeikis proclaims, "You know you're watching something that's going to change the course of history." He couldn't possibly be referring to Colossal. Although most critics seem to love it, I can't (for the life of me) understand why. Hathaway plays a hapless (yet attractive) drunk that develops an nonsensical connection to a Godzilla look-alike halfway across the world. I won't spoil the ending (such as it is) but I'm sure those aforementioned critics will argue it's a powerful statement against domestic violence, and a boon for feminism. I prefer to call it a lousy rom-com/ridiculous sci-fi monstrosity. Stay clear.
