Doctor Strange Movie Review

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in Doctor Strange

Strange Days

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A disgraced former surgeon named Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes a powerful sorcerer under the tutelage of a mystic known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton.) Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star in this entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister.)

Nobody's perfect. (Evidently) not even Marvel. Doctor Strange isn't just bad, it's terrible. It opens with Batman-like aspirations, before cratering into a poor man's version of Inception... only more non-sensical. In between, we're exposed to one lousy performance after another (including normally stellar actors Cumberbatch, Ejiofor and Mikkelsen.) The latter gets to hide behind the worst makeup ever, but it makes no difference: No one could make this movie watchable, yet alone better. It doesn't even look good (cartoonish leaps to mind, despite a hefty $165 million budget.) Ejiofor warns, "The bill comes due... always." Can you say insufficient funds?

Grade: F
