Star Trek Beyond Movie Review

Chris Pine stars in Star Trek Beyond
Let's Make Some Noise

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the Enterprise encounter an alien warrior race when marooned on a distant planet after the destruction of their spaceship in this thrilling sequel directed by Fast & Furious director Justin Lin.

"To boldly go where no one has gone before," implies (among other things) originality. Perhaps the franchise is running out of steam/ideas? Lin ditches the charm & humor that made Star Trek our #1 movie of 2009, relying instead on lavish special effects and dull one-on-one sidebars between once-interesting characters (save for Karl Urban's Bones, who still brings the funny.) Kirk's right, "Things have started to feel... episodic." Don't get me wrong: The action's spectacular, but Trekkies want soul as well, and Star Trek Beyond has little (if any.) Otherwise, isn't it "just another day at the fleet?"

Grade: C+
