The BFG Movie Review

Ruby Barnhill stars in The BFG

The Witching Hour

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: This film tells the tale of a young girl, the Queen of England and a benevolent giant known as the BFG, who set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world. Directed by Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg to Martin Scorsese: I see your Hugo, and raise you The BFG. Both movies are beautiful to look at, but (at least to a 47-year-old film critic) boring to sit through. The evil giants are just that... evil; and even Mark Rylance's "Big Friendly Giant," is guilty of a creepy kidnapping, barely 10 minutes in. Toss in another annoying kid (Ruby Barnhill) with a British accent, and it's a wonder I stayed (awake) to the very end. That said, kids should love it; and the animation is breathtaking. Solid pace and story too, but definitely for younger audiences only.

Grade: B-
