Midnight Special Movie Review

Jaeden Lieberher stars in Midnight Special

Not Your Average Superhero

Rotten Tomatoes PlotMichael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, and Kirsten Dunst star in writer/director Jeff Nichols' drama about a father and his eight-year-old son who go on the lam upon discovering that the boy possesses mysterious powers.

Nichols' Midnight Special is one of those rare movies that keeps you guessing until (and even after) the very end. It's packed with mystery, thrills and top-notch performances from an eclectic cast (Shannon, Edgerton, Adam Driver.) Better still, Nichols avoids the trappings of a typical sci-fi blockbuster, relying instead on acting/storytelling versus overpriced CGI. The ending isn't great (copying The Day the Earth Stood Still = bad idea) but getting there is an absolute blast. Similar to, but not quite on par with Take Shelter: It places a close second to Deadpool as best movie (so far) of 2016.
