Triple 9 Movie Review

Anthony Mackie & Clifton Collins, Jr. (r) star in Triple 9

In the Dark

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: In Triple 9, a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist and the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for "officer down." Their plan is turned upside down, when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck action-packed finale tangled with double-crosses, greed and revenge. Directed by John Hillcoat.

What good is a movie, if you can't even see it? Hillcoat's Triple 9 is hands down, the worst cop movie I've ever seen (and that includes Cop and a Half + Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.) It's not the comically implausible/unoriginal story mind you, or even the lackluster acting (including an almost unrecognizable Kate Winslet.) Nope, Hillcoat deserves all the blame... for his inability/refusal to capture light. I can only assume he was trying to hide how bad his movie was; but evidently he doesn't know how to do that right either. Training Day... minus any training.

Grade: F
