Joy Movie Review

Jennifer Lawrence stars in Joy

Miracle Mop Woman

IMDb PlotJoy is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty. Directed by David O. Russell. Stars Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Édgar Ramírez and Isabella Rossellini.

There's a lot going on in Russell's Joy, most of it great (save for a moderately unsatisfying conclusion.) Tops on the list is Lawrence, who continues to develop/excel at a ridiculous clip. Her character absorbs grief from beginning to end; yet through it all, displays remarkable perseverance and poise. She's the epicenter of the movie; but never once, do you get the impression that she's aware of her own importance. Instead, she paves the way for others to shine (fantastic supporting cast, particularly De Niro and Madsen.) "Clean up" the ending, and this could be one of 2015's best.
