GW Men's Hoops Opens Season with 85-76 Win Over Lafayette
Cavanaugh Posts 15 Point, 17 Rebound Double-Double in GW Debut
Playing his first game for George Washington, junior Tyler Cavanaugh had a monster double-double with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds in the Colonials' season-opening 85-76 win over 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Lafayette on Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Cavanaugh combined with frontcourt mate Kevin Larsen
to dominate the Leopards inside, as Larsen's career-high 24 points and
11 rebounds were too much for Lafayette (0-1) to overcome. The senior
from Denmark also contributed three blocks - of GW's seven - and two
steals on the night.
Senior Patricio Garino netted 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, in a team-high 34 minutes of action.
Sophomore Paul Jorgensen made four Colonials in double figures in scoring with 10 points of his own, six of which came at the charity stripe in seven attempts. Jorgensen dished a team-high four assists against zero turnovers.
GW (1-0) beat Lafayette 50-32 on the boards, and 42-20 in points in the paint.
Nick Lindner led Lafayette with a game-high 27 points on 8-of-18 shooting, in a game in which GW held Lafayette to a .333 field goal percentage.
The Colonials led by 24 with 15:21 left in the game, but Lindler helped Lafayette make it a game. The senior scored 21 points after halftime, connecting on 7-of-12 shots and 6-of-6 free throws, as Lafayette closed within 12 on a jumper by Matt Klinewski with 7:16 remaining.
Alex Mitola, though, made a key step-back jumper to halt a 9-2 run while Larsen and Cavanaugh continued to have their way down low to keep the game out of reach.
Next up for the Colonials is a primetime, Monday night matchup with No. 6 Virginia at the Smith Center. Tip time is 7:30 PM with the game set to air on ESPN2.
