Men’s Basketball Returns to Winning Ways in Rout of Richmond, 85-69
As the DMV settled in ahead of a weekend storm,
George Washington's men's basketball team by contrast was out and running. In a critical league matchup with the
Richmond Spiders, who were just a game behind GW in the conference standings entering play, the Revolutionaries earned the season sweep by hanging 52 points on the scoreboard before halftime, on the way to an 85-69 wire-to-wire win.
The opening 20 minutes saw GW connect at a 55.9% clip from the floor, with 10 of 19 field goals made coming from the land of plenty in a 52.6% 3-point shooting exhibition in the opening 20 minutes.
Though the offense slowed after intermission, the damage was done as GW's defense stayed strong to close the game out. Richmond was held to sub-40% shooting for the game, and struggled from deep late to thwart any second half comeback attempt.
George Washington's lead was 25 at its largest, fueled by five players who finished between 11 and 16 points, with
Tre Dinkins leading the way with his 16 coming in a reserve role in just 18:33 of court time. Dinkins and
Christian Jones (14 points), put up matching 4-of-7 afternoons behind the arc.
It was the trifecta that accounted for the difference between the clubs Saturday, as GW's 15 threes compared to the Spiders' seven, allowed for the runaway 16-point win that saw Richmond fight but not truly threaten.
