Venom Movie Review

Tom Hardy & Riz Ahmed (r) star in Venom

Downgrade

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) attempts a comeback following a scandal, but accidentally becomes the host of an alien symbiote that gives him a violent super alter-ego: Venom. Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy organisation looking for a symbiote of their own. Directed by Ruben Fleischer.

Sony's first foray into the Marvel Universe might/should be its last. Venom was a cool idea in theory, but placed in the incapable hands of Fleischer (remember Gangster Squad?) and writers Jeff Pinker and Scott Rosenberg, never stood a chance. For starters, it's a blatant ripoff of Upgrade, only way less interesting. It takes forever to get going, which means heavy/unnecessary doses of the poorly cast Hardy & Michelle (Pepper Potts wannabe) Williams, before diving headfirst into a cesspool of terrible special effects. Eddie repeats, "There's no such thing as can't." What about don't (as in, make this movie?)

Grade: D-
