Senior Scorers Step Up for Firebirds in 80-68 Win vs. Mercy

The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team earned an 80-68 East Coast Conference victory vs. Mercy College Saturday afternoon at UDC Gym.

The Firebirds snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. They are 2-0 at home this season after today's win. The Mavericks, meanwhile, have now lost three of their last four, and fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Senior Natasha Roy (#0) scored 20 points

UDC's senior guards Mia-Alexis Lloyd and Natasha Roy scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, while combining for eight rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Senior transfer center Patricia Albert pitched in with nine points and seven rebounds, and junior guard Tyra Coombs added seven points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Roy, a 2nd year transfer at UDC, reached the 1,000-point career scoring milestone with a three-pointer at the 58-second mark in the 3rd quarter. She'd go on to score six more points on the day and finish the afternoon with 1,006 points for her career.

Tyra Coombs (#22) led UDC with 9 rebounds

Mercy similarly featured two scorers who combined for 43 points, as Taysha Bender scored 23 and Amber Brown scored 20. Forward Alexis Lake also added 11 points, but no other Mavericks scored more than five points for the day.

Sarah Hare (#1) scored 6 points off the bench

The Firebirds out-shot their guests, 38-percent to 33-percent from the field and 37-percent to 22-percent from three-point range, they out-rebounded them, 53-42, had 11 more assists (16-5), and 10 more bench points (17-7.)

Danielle Harrington (#2) added 4 points & 5 rebounds

UDC trailed only for 15 seconds after Bender's three-pointer made it 3-2 just 33 seconds into the game, but Roy's three-pointer at the 9:18 mark put the Firebirds ahead to stay. Roy's three helped UDC race out to an early 14-3 advantage, and they never looked back. Roy and Lloyd scored nine points apiece, and the Firebirds led 22-14 at quarter's end.

Mercy opened the 2nd quarter on a 10-3 burst to close the gap to just one, 25-24, on a three-point play by Brown at the 4:54 mark, but a 7-0 response by UDC helped the Firebirds pad their lead back to eight, 32-24. UDC would lead 38-31 at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, the Mavericks once again got off to a quick start, out-scoring the Firebirds, 6-0 over the first 2:11, and pulling within one, 38-37 on a Brown three-pointer at 7:49. Still a one-possession game as the clock ticked under 1:30 in the 3rd period, sophomore guard Maya Thomas knocked down a clutch three-pointer at the 1:18 mark, followed 20 seconds later by Roy's big-time three-pointer to reach 1,000 points, and UDC was now in front by nine, 56-47. The Firebirds would head into the final period with a 58-50 advantage.

The Firebirds took their first double-digit lead since the first quarter with a Patricia Albert layup to put them up 66-55 at the 6:34 mark, and they coasted to victory from there. They'd go on to win by their largest margin of the day, 80-68.

Next up, UDC will host crosstown Division II rival Bowie State in the Battle of the DMV, Monday, December 10th at 5 PM.
