Firebirds’ Fourth Quarter Rally Sends UDC to 10-8 Victory vs. Roberts Wesleyan

The University of the District of Columbia men's lacrosse team powered their way to a 14-9 win in their opening East Coast Conference game against Molloy College Saturday afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.

The Firebirds improved to 6-1, 1-0 in ECC play. An all-around superb performance by the District of Columbia was highlighted by senior LaRon Hinton, who scored a game-high four goals and one assist. In addition, junior Syrrus Nash claimed two goals and two assists.

Senior Teilen Celentano, now ranked #2 in the ECC in face-offs, had another tremendous showing, winning 22-of-25 face-offs, as well as securing a game-high of eight ground balls.

Molloy Lions were driven in their efforts by Nick Del Giorno with two goals and two assists. However, applauds must go to the Lions goalie Ryan Toomey who saved an impressive 17 of 31 shots to prevent the Firebirds in scoring more.

With the intensity at a high, the 1st quarter saw Molloy take the lead in the 11th minute. Although, that was short lasted when Hinton equalized to sustain UDC pressure. With momentum carried in the Firebirds favor, they took the next two goals through Canadian pair Alan Singleton and Tyler Mace. The Lions did not back down when they looked for a way back to make it 3-2. The 1st quarter would eventually be taken by the District of Columbia 6-2.

Sophomore Edmund Taylor (#19) added 2 goals

The visitors showed why they are a determined outfit when they fought back in the 2nd quarter to make the score 8-7 in their favor at half time. Nevertheless, the Firebirds were persistent and showed their quality in the final two quarters when they scored an impressive eight goals and conceded only one to make sure that their opponents could not fight their way back. The final score ended 14-9 in what was a fantastic match-up between these two teams.

Freshman Turner Allison (#16) scored an unassisted goal

UDC battled their way past their opponents winning 22-20 turnovers, 41-38 shots, and taking 38-27 ground balls.

Junior Nikolas Lund-Murray (#15) recorded 10 saves

The Firebirds will be in action again, Wednesday, March 21st when they go to nationally ranked LIU Post at 12 noon.
