American Men's Basketball Succumbs Late in Home Loss to Army West Point

Sa'eed Nelson finished with 15 points and seven assists, while Larry Motuzis added 13 points, but Army West Point rallied late in the game to earn a 58-54 victory over American University in a Patriot League men's basketball game Monday night at Bender Arena.

The Eagles lost their sixth straight game and fell to 3-12 overall and 0-4 in the league. The Black Knights improved to 8-7 and 2-2 in the league.


Matt Wilson of Army led all scorers with 16 points. The Black Knights erased a 30-25 halftime deficit to earn the victory.

Sam Iorio hit a 3-pointer to put AU ahead 54-50 late in the second half. John Emzie answered with a 3-pointer with 5:33 left and Babacar Thiombane scored on a short jumper to put Army ahead with 2:02 to play.

Tommy Funk hit one of two foul shots to give Army a 56-54 lead before the Eagles missed an inside shot to tie. Tucker Blackwell sealed the victory with two free throws with a second left.

Larry Motuzis (#5) added 13 points, 3 rebounds & 2 assists

American will play Thursday night at home against Loyola Maryland at 7 PM.
