GW Men's Basketball Sinks Pirates of Hampton, 65-57
Steeves accounts for 14 points, five rebounds and four assists
In its second home game of the young season, the GW men's basketball team earned its second win via a 65-57 defeat of the Hampton Pirates on Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Grad student Patrick Steeves, an applied mathematics major, calculated a perfect formula to add to GW's win column. He tallied 14 points on 7-of-15 shooting while counting five rebounds and four assists. Two steals from the Canadian forward also accounted for half of GW's sum on the defensive end.
It was on that end of the floor where the Colonials earned the win, as despite a game-high 25 points from the Pirates' leading gun, Jermaine Marrow (12-of-25 3pt. FG), the remainder of Hampton's whole totaled just 11 field goals in 34 tries; a .324 shooting percentage that included a 1-of-11 effort from behind the three-point arc (.091) sans Marrow's lone make in his only attempt from deep.

Sophomore Jair Bolden supplemented Steeves' offense with 13 points and a game-high five assists, in a Colonials' offensive effort that assisted on 15 of 26 made field goals while only turning the ball over on six occasions. Two of Steeves' 14 came off a nifty give-and-go in transition after he grabbed a defensive board, pushed the ball up the court and found the proper angle to hit a driving Yuta Watanabe with a no-look pass, before receiving the dime in return to finish at the rim and extend to a double-digit, 47-36 margin. GW largely had the game in hand from there, extending to an 18-point lead at its largest with just over 7:00 minutes to play, before cruising to the eight-point win.

Justin Williams enjoyed a breakout performance in the contest, as the sophomore netted a career-high nine points, including his first career three-pointer, in a career-high 19 minutes of action. Per the directions of head coach Maurice Joseph, the Colonials also divided rebounding duties, as eight Colonials grabbed between two and seven rebounds. It was Arnaldo Toro who paced the Colonials with seven boards, his third straight game to start the season collecting at least seven caroms. Williams, Toro and Bolden - the trio of sophomores who saw action for GW - each impressed in certain aspects, as Bolden extended his streak to start the season of hitting at least three three-pointers in every game with a 3-of-7 outing from deep.

GW's other grad student, transfer Bo Zeigler, added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting and a perfect 100 at the free throw line (3-for-3) as part of a bench unit that outdid their counterparts by a 22-10 margin.

The game was played as part of the Las Vegas Invitational that will see GW take on No. 15 Xavier on Thanksgiving Day in Vegas, followed by either Kansas State or Arizona State on Friday. Rider awaits GW first though, as the Colonials have a quick turnaround before hosting the Broncos on Monday night at 7 PM.
