GW Volleyball Falls in Home Opener to Indiana

Colonials back in action with Saturday doubleheader against LIU Brooklyn (12 PM) and Hofstra (7 PM)

The George Washington volleyball team fell to visiting Indiana, 3-0, in its home opener on Friday night in front of a raucous Charles E. Smith Center crowd in the second match of the GW Invitational.

Key Stats:
• GW out-blocked Indiana, 9.5 - 4.5 on the evening with four different players posting at least two rejections. Freshman Callie Fauntleroy led the way with seven block assists while junior Kristel Moor was also active at the net, totaling six block assists.

• The teams battled through 17 ties and nine lead changes in the three-set match.

• Indiana hit .318 (51k-16e-110a) while limiting GW to just .141 (24k-11e-92a) for the match.

• Indiana also held advantages in digs (53-37) and assists (46-21.)

• Both teams totaled three service aces.


Set 1: Indiana 25, GW 15
• GW broke an early 8-8 tie by scoring three of the next four points to pull ahead, 11-9.

• Indiana responded by scoring the next five points to ignite a difference-making 11-2 run to take a 21-13 lead.

• GW tried to chip away at the lead late, but Indiana held on for the 10-point win.

Set 2: Indiana 25, GW 18
• The Hoosiers started hot and played out to a 7-2 lead to force an early timeout by the Colonials.

• GW kept it close and was able to get within three points of the lead at 18-15, but Indiana again used a key run to close the set for the 25-18 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3: Indiana 25, GW 22
• The third set was the closest of the match as the teams fought through six ties and four lead changes.

• Indiana scored the first three points and led 7-6 before the Colonials seized the lead on a kill by junior Kelsey Clark and a service ace from sophomore Jaimeson Lee.

Kelsey Clark (#4) added 6 kills

• The Hoosiers answered with a 4-1 run to take an 11-9 lead but the Colonials countered with a 5-0 spurt to take a 14-11 lead and force a timeout.

• GW kept the Hoosiers at bay in the middle portion of the set and led 21-17 late, but three straight points made it one-point contest at 21-20 and GW took a timeout.

• Momentum was on the Hoosiers' side as they closed on a 5-1 run out of the timeout to clinch the sweep with a 25-22 win.

Up Next:
• GW will play a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap its first home weekend of the season. The Colonials meet LIU Brooklyn in the second match of the day at 12 PM before the nightcap against Hofstra at 7 PM.
