Smithsonian Magazine Announces 13th Annual Museum Day Live!, a Celebration of Boundless Curiosity

Participating museums will offer free admission on September 23, 2017, with a downloadable Museum Day Live! ticket

Smithsonian magazine has designated Saturday, September 23, the 13th annual Museum Day Live!, an initiative in which participating museums across the United States open their doors for free to those who download a branded ticket. The annual event allows museums nationwide to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day.

This year, Museum Day Live! is partnering with Microsoft to create special interactive lesson plans using Minecraft: Education Edition. Participating museums will be able to download the lesson plans to enhance the Museum Day Live! experience at their facility. The Minecraft: Education Edition extensions will be based on Smithsonian materials and will be available for download by museums on August 1 on the Museum Day Live! website. Following the event, Microsoft will provide schools with access to the Minecraft: Education Edition extensions.

Those wishing to attend and participate in Museum Day Live! can visit smithsonian.com/museumday to learn more, and download a Museum Day Live! ticket beginning on August 25th. Each ticket grants the ticket holder, and one guest, free access to any participating museum on September 23. One ticket is permitted per email address. A list of participating museums, which will be updated in the coming weeks, can be found at smithsonian.com/museumday/venues.

“We are all about access for everyone to cultural gems everywhere and Museum Day Live! makes that available,” says Amy Wilkins, Chief Revenue Officer at Smithsonian Media. “Having Microsoft as a partner to activate in schools and museums is a natural next step.

Museums in all 50 states have already signed up to participate in Smithsonian magazine’s 2017 Museum Day Live!, the largest event of its kind. More than 1,300 museums are expected to participate this year.
