Landmark Theatres E Street Cinema’s “Popcorn and Politics” film series continues this June with a pairing of benefit screenings of classic and newly-released political films. Both events will feature thoughtful post-screening conversations with filmmakers and film subjects to give audiences a deeper look at timely political issues.

The June 2017 “Popcorn and Politics” Film Series Schedule Includes...

HELL ON EARTH: THE FALL OF SYRIA AND THE RISE OF ISIS
Tuesday, June 6th, 7:00 PM

In this National Geographic documentary, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sebastian Junger and his Emmy-winning filmmaking partner, Nick Quested, chronicle Syria’s descent into the unbridled chaos that allowed the rise of the Islamic State, better known as ISIS. Pulling from nearly one thousand hours of stunningly visceral footage - from that of a family living under ISIS control that finally fled to Turkey, to Kurdish fighters in Sinjar and Shia militias in Iraq and even to al-Qaida-affiliated fighters in and around Aleppo and Raqqa - Junger and Quested cover the ISIS catastrophe from multiple angles and feature interviews with top experts from around the world. Consequently, the filmmakers, who previously collaborated on a trio of films about war (“Restrepo,” “The Last Patrol” and “Korengal”) capture the Syrian war’s harrowing carnage, political and social consequences, and, most important, its human toll, while painting an alarming picture of the West’s role in the creation of ISIS.

SPECIAL APPEARANCE: Academy Award nominated filmmaker, award-winning journalist and best-selling author Sebastian Junger will host a Q&A immediately following the film.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS.)

ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN
Tuesday, June 27th, 7:00 PM

In the Watergate Building on June 17, 1972, lights go on and four burglars are caught breaking into the offices of the Democratic National Headquarters. That night triggered revelations that would eventually drive a U.S. President from office. The Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) grabbed the initial break-in story and stayed with it through doubts, denials and discouragement. “All the President’s Men” is their story. Directed by Alan J. Pakula (“Sophie’s Choice”) and based on the best-selling Woodward/Bernstein book, the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture), winning four, including Best Supporting Actor for Jason Robards' brilliant performance as Post editor Ben Bradlee. This memorable true-life movie also expertly explores the inner-workings of a working daily newspaper, where the mission is to not only get the story - but also to get it right.

SPECIAL APPEARANCE: Former Executive Editor of The Washington Post, Leonard Downie, Jr. will be joined by Journalist Bob Woodward - whose work on the Watergate scandal won The Washington Post the 1973 Pulitzer Prize - for a Q&A immediately following the film.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF.)
