Armel Potter Signs with GW Men’s Basketball
Potter averaged 13.3 points over two seasons at Charleston Southern
The GW men’s basketball team has added a highly-coveted guard in the form of transfer Armel Potter, who averaged 13.3 points in two seasons at Charleston Southern. Potter will sit out next season and have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2018-19.
“We are thrilled to welcome Armel into our family,” said head coach Maurice Joseph. “His character, grit, and competitive spirit will benefit our program a great deal on and off the court. He is a leader with a very bright future and we are all looking forward to him representing the Buff & Blue.”
“I felt like GW had everything I’m looking for: a young coach that can relate to me, and I feel like the relationship he built with my family and me was really important,” said Potter. “Also, Coach Joseph has the same goals in mind for me that I do; he wants me to get my master’s degree and succeed on the court, which stood out. GW is the best school academically of all the places I considered and that was also very important to me.”
In his first season at CSU, Potter led the team in eight different categories, including scoring (13.8), assists (3.2) and steals (25). He was named to the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team and ranked second among his classmates in scoring, while leading the group in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. In his first Big South Tournament game he posted a career-high 28 points and for the year had five 20-point games while scoring in double figures 21 times.
As a sophomore, he saw his shooting percentage rise to .454 while again leading the team in assists (3.2) and ranking second in scoring (12.7) and steals (27.) His 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio was tied for the best in the Big South, while he scored in double figures 23 times and reached the 20-point plateau on six occasions.
“With the basketball program having won 20 games for four straight years and competing in a great conference like the Atlantic 10, I know we’ll continue to be successful and I’ll have an opportunity to get great exposure,” said Potter.
Potter is the fourth player to join GW’s 2017 recruiting class, alongside fellow guards Justin Mazzulla, Maceo Jack and Terry Nolan Jr..
