Simit + Smith Media Dinner Recap

Döner Kebap Dürüm (Wrap)

There's a new sheriff simit in town; and you can find it in the heart of Georgetown (at the corner of M Street & Wisconsin Avenue, NW.) What's a simit, you ask? It's a Turkish bagel... only crunchier on the outside, and softer inside. In other words, the perfect breakfast bread. I hadn't had one in years; but with the opening of Simit + Smith, that's (thankfully) about to change.

It's nice to see something new and exciting in Georgetown. For years, it ruled the culinary roost (along with Adams Morgan) but recently, it's taken a back seat to the likes of H Street, Penn Quarter and the U Street Corridor. Simit + Smith is a top-notch bakery and cafe with upscale (homemade) food at fast casual prices. The breads are tasty (don't miss the Acma... a Turkish brioche) and the salads, fresh, light and lovely to look at. But it's the sandwiches/wraps, I'll remember, particularly the Döner Kebap Dürüm, which cracked our Dirty Dozen (top 12 bites in the DMV.)

Acma Sandwich

The Döner Kebap Dürüm features sirloin kebap, lettuce, roasted bell peppers and a to-die-for Cafe de Paris sauce that simply must be tried devoured. It's available as a sandwich too (on homemade sourdough bread) but I prefer the softer texture of a wrap, especially with the aforementioned silky-smooth sauce. Both versions cost a mere $11, making it my new go-to (and to-go) sandwich to sneak into the nearby AMC Georgetown theatres.

Aegean Feta Salad

Pizzas are available too; although I didn't get a chance to try their Napoli Pizza ($5.50 with tomatoes and mozzarella.) I did however sample S&S's Antep Lahmacun, a very thin (too thin) flat bread with insanely good (and zesty) minced meat tucked inside. Serve it on a thicker bread, and we're in business.

Desserts range from baklava (good, but standard issue) to cookies to cinnamon scones, and a wide variety of Turkish coffees (strong, think Espresso 2.0) and teas. See below for the full menu. Simit + Smith is located at 1077 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, and is open Monday-Thursday, 7 AM - 8 PM, Friday-Saturday, 7 AM - 9 PM, and Sundays from 8 AM to 8 PM. Check back soon for our official review.
