The Washington School of Ballet will hold auditions for TWB@THEARC Summer Dance Programs at its Southeast DC campus. Programs are open to students of various skill levels, ages 4-18. Summer programs are offered June 27 - July 23 and include day and evening classes.
WHEN: Auditions held the weeks of March 7, April 4 and May 2. Parents must call to schedule.
WHERE: THEARC located at 1901 Mississippi Avenue SE, Suite 202, Washington DC 20020.
Day Program
(Ages 8 years and up with at least 2 years of ballet training)
Level 2-5
An advanced and technically challenging summer intensive for invested dancers who would like to strengthen their ballet skills and explore other dance genres.
Classes meet 8 AM - 3:30 PM daily, Monday through Friday. Includes breakfast and lunch.
Classes include ballet, pointe work, jazz, modern, African dance, character, stretch, composition and dance history. One of the unique opportunities for students in this program is to also take art and/or music classes with partners including Levine Music and Corcoran Artreach. If additional programming is of interest, a limited number of before and after-care slots are available to TWB@THEARC students in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club at THEARC. Students may be dropped off as early as 7 AM and be picked up as late as 6 PM.
Evening Program
(Ages 4-18)
Pre-Ballet, Levels 1A-C, Teen Program
Pre-Ballet serves as an introduction to the classroom and body movement for students ages 4-7. Classes meet 45 minutes - 1 hour per week.
Levels 1A/1C & 1B
Level 1 is the first year of intensive training for the ballet student. Classes meet twice a week.
Teen Program
The Teen Program allows for students to train and stay in shape during the evenings and weekends, leaving time for other activities during the day.
Classes meet 2-3 times per week.
Teen Ballet A is designed to allow students with limited or no prior experience to take ballet. These students exhibit flexibility as well as a willingness to work hard and be fully engaged in the classroom.
Teen Ballet B focuses on continuing to build ballet technique including pointe work and modern dance. Students in these classes must have one year pointe experience.
A non-refundable audition fee of $30 is due at the time of the audition (fee increases to $40 in April). Tuition for The Washington Ballet @ THEARC Summer Program is based on a sliding fee scale.

ABOUT THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL OF BALLET:
Co-founded in 1944 by the late Mary Day and Lisa Gardiner, The Washington School of Ballet (TWSB) is recognized nationally and internationally for its classical training and dedication to excellence in dance and dance education. Under the direction of Kee Juan Han, School Director, the school trains more than 700 students each year at its Northwest Campus studios on Wisconsin Avenue and an additional 350 students at its Southeast Campus housed at The Town Hall Education, Arts and Recreation Center (THEARC) also known as The Washington Ballet at THEARC (TWB@THEARC). The Athenaeum in Alexandria, Virginia, provides a third campus for the school, serving 50 more young students. In the fall of 2015, the Joseph Coleman Studios at Cathedral Commons will open and serve as an additional northwest campus for approximately 180 students.
The Washington School of Ballet curriculum includes pre-ballet, boys' classes and a graded program for children through young adulthood, many of whom wish to pursue dance as a career. The school also offers a Professional Training Program that brings together especially talented students from around the world for intensive training under The Washington School of Ballet's renowned faculty. Overseen by Kee Juan Han, all three campuses share a syllabus to ensure the same excellence in training at each location. Both the Northwest and Southeast campuses also offer comprehensive adult programs.
ABOUT THEARC:
Inaugurated in the summer of 2005, Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) hosts The Washington School of Ballet's Southeast Campus as well as two flagship community engagement programs, DanceDC and the EXCEL! Scholarship. THEARC is also home to ten other partner organizations, including The Levine School of Music, Corcoran ArtReach, Washington Middle School for Girls, Trinity University, Children's Health Project DC, Boys and Girls Club FBR Branch, Parklands Community Center, LIFT-DC and Covenant House, making it a widely-used community asset.
