Charlie Jones Leads Men's Basketball to Overtime Win on Wednesday

Junior Charlie Jones tied the game on a three-pointer with 55 seconds remaining in overtime and then won the game with a free throw with two seconds left to lift American over Lafayette 60-59 on Wednesday night at Bender Arena.

American (8-18) improves to 6-9 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette (5-21) fell to 2-13 in league play.

Charlie Jones (#20) added 6 points & 6 rebounds

Senior Jesse Reed led the Eagles with 15 points and had a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman Delante Jones had 11 points and seven rebounds and senior Marko Vasic added five points, eight rebounds and five assists. Charlie Jones finished with six points and six rebounds, which added to the 23 bench points for the Eagles.

The Eagles owned the glass pulling down 39 rebounds to Lafayette's 27.

Freshman James Washington scored 5 points

The team got out to a quick start with an 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Lafayette tied the game at 11 on a jumper by Matt Klinewski at 12:08. Junior Jalen Rhea gave the Eagles a 19-14 advantage on a jumper with 9:23 remaining.

Lafayette retied the contest, 19-19, with 7:37 on a jumper by Ben Freeland. Both sides traded baskets the remainder of the frame and took the lead on a three by Zach Rufer with 53 seconds left.

Reed led the Eagles with eight points and Delante Jones had seven. The Eagles shot 36 percent from the field and pulled down 18 boards.

American held Lafayette's top scorer Nick Lindner (#11) to 4 points

The score was tight for the first eight minutes of the second half until the Leopards went on a 5-0 run and led 41-37 with 10:55.


The visitors led the rest of the half until Vasic tied the game with a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left.

Prior the to the free throws, Charlie Jones made a block on a drive by Rufer with 38 seconds left.

Future star

Linder had a chance to win the game for the Leopards but rimmed out allowing the Eagles a chance to fire away a half-court shot by Reed that missed sending the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Lafayette took a four-point lead before the Eagles made a comeback on a jumper by Reed and a free throw by Vasic.

Lafayette then took a 59-56 lead with 1:18 left on a triple by Rufer. On the next possession, Charlie Jones tied the game on a three.

Klinewski led the Leopards with 18 points and Rufer chipped in 14 off the bench

American will head out for its final road game at Holy Cross on Sunday at noon.
