Women's Volleyball: American 3 Colgate 0

American Downs Colgate in Straight Sets

Freshman Aleksandra Kazala recorded her fourth double-double of the season to lead the the American University volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Colgate on Saturday.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 24-6 on the season and remained undefeated in the Patriot League with a 15-0 ledger. Meanwhile, the Raiders dropped to 10-15 overall and 8-6 in the league.

Kristyna Lindovska (#14) posted a double-double (10 kills, 12 digs)

Kazala finished with 13 kills and 11 digs to pace American, while senior Kristyna Lindovska also posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Carmen Unzue added 10 kills and a team-high .692 attack percentage.

The first set was close early on, but the Eagles began to slowly pull away. Senior setter Monika Smidova led the team with kills on all five of her attempts, as American hit .419 in the opening set.

AU never trailed in the second set, taking an early 10-4 lead. While Colgate fought back to cut the Eagles' advantage to 13-12, American finished out the set on a 12-3 run. Kazala and Unzue led the way for AU, each recording five kills without an error.

Sophomore Hoakalei Dawson (#7) led AU with 12 digs

Colgate, the only Patriot League team to push American to five sets this season, came out strong in the third set, challenging the Eagles. After the two teams traded points early on, the Raiders pulled ahead to a 15-12 lead. Again, American responded, scoring five straight points to spark a 13-3 run to close out the set and the match.

"We had everybody on target for the attack today, and Monika set a good match," said American head coach Barry Goldberg. "We had a good flow with what we were doing and everybody contributed. It was a nice win for us."

Not as easy as it looks...

American concludes the regular season next Friday, November 13, when it hosts Loyola Maryland in a 7 PM contest.
