A growing Strathmore family brings more youth ensembles to Music Center for December concerts

Holiday celebrations come in many sizes, shapes, and stripes - and so too does Strathmore’s nod to holiday merriment in December with an eclectic mix of concerts from classical music, klezmer, and jubilant a cappella to hip-hop interpretations of holiday favorites. The Music Center and Mansion will be packed with 11 Strathmore-presented performances throughout December, including Dave Koz, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, Matisyahu, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, as well as the Strathmore Children’s Chorus and newest member of the art center’s growing family of education programs, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras. Opera star and Artist in Residence (AIR) mentor Carmen Balthrop and pianist José Cáceres Danielsen emphasize the spirit of the season, performing rare and delicate Christmas art song gems in their program, The Art of Christmas. Balthrop is mentor to two current AIRs: Be Steadwell and Cassandra Allen. Balthrop is a singing diplomat - throughout her career, she has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and for various dignitaries including the late Nelson Mandela and Chen Shui-bian, former President of Taiwan.

Strathmore’s resident chorus kicks off the holiday season with the joyful sound of young voices lifted in song. A family-friendly holiday mashup, The Hip Hop Nutcracker reimagines Tchaikovsky’s classic score through explosive hip-hop choreography. A dozen all-star dancers, an on-stage DJ, and an electric violinist bring the traditional “Nutcracker” story to life in contemporary New York City. The New York Times calls The Hip Hop Nutcracker, “A generous dose of contemporary spirit sure to heat up even the most restless and wintry of souls.”

Dave Koz’s signature smooth jazz comes with an upbeat personality. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of his breakthrough album, Live at Stubb’s, Matisyahu takes a new look at the music that first earned him public attention. This tour reconnects Matisyahu with long-time musical collaborators from his early touring days, including Live at Stubb’s guitarist Aaron Dugan. Matisyahu and his band present an evening of stripped-down, acoustic arrangements highlighting the music that launched his career while taking fans on a journey through the evolution of Live at Stubb’s to his most recent release, Akeda.
