Bridge of Spies Movie Review

Mary Rylance & Tom Hanks (r) star in Bridge of Spies

Red-Letter Day

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Tom Hanks stars as the American attorney tasked with negotiating the release of a U-2 spy plane pilot who was shot down over Russia at the height of the Cold War in this historical drama from DreamWorks Studios. Steven Spielberg and Marc E. Platt produce a film written by Matt Charman.

Spielberg's Bridge of Spies starts with a bang, but quickly fizzles into a relatively dull, overlong (135 minutes) drama, conspicuously light on action & thrills. Hanks is solid as ever, but his character (and almost everyone around him) is bland with one notable exception (Mark Rylance.) Rylance is sensational as Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, so good in fact... I wish the movie were more all about him. Abel frequently asks, "Would it help?" and the answer (in this case) is a resounding yes. If you're looking for 007, stay clear; but Cold War aficionados may want to check it out.
