Venezuelan Food Truck, Arepa Zone, to Launch at Union Market

Winner of Launch Pad Competition Will Open on August 29

On Saturday, August 29, Venezuelan food truck, Arepa Zone, will launch its first DC brick-and-mortar location at Union Market. District foodies may recognize the popular street snacks as this year's winner of Launch Pad, a culinary business competition created by Union MarketMess Hall and Ris Lacoste.

Arepa Zone at Union Market will offer the brand's signature arepa sandwiches - a grilled corn patty filled with meats, cheeses and more. Market-goers can choose from over 13 trademark combinations, including the Sifrinia (chicken salad, avocado, shredded cheddar cheese) Canosa (shredded beef and shredded queso fresco) and Dominó (black beans and shredded queso fresco.)

Washingtonians can expect to nosh on Venezuelan favorites such as cachapas, a sweet corn crepe reminiscent of a quesadilla, tequeños - gourmet cheese sticks served with a special garlic-cilantro dipping sauce and Frescolita and Chinotto sodas.

The chef/owner duo, Ali Arellano and Gabriela Febres, are excited to share the Venezuelan culture with Washington.

“We are so thrilled,” Febres said. “Serving arepa is our way of bringing the Venezuelan community together, and we are honored to be able to share that community with Union Market."

Arepa Zone at Union Market will be open Tuesday through Sunday. To celebrate the launch, Arepa Zone is hosting a grand opening celebration on Saturday, August 29 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the market with a live DJ. Guests are encouraged to arrive early - the first 25 patrons will be treated to free tequeños. Arepa Zone's original food truck will also be parked on Neil Place for those looking to purchase their favorite arepa.
