Colonials to Host Volleyball and Softball Championships

The George Washington Department of Athletics & Recreation has announced that it will play host to the 2015 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship and the 2016 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship this upcoming academic year.

The Charles E. Smith Center, complete with its #MonumentalHomeCourtAdvantage which features the iconic Washington, D.C. skyline, will welcome the A-10 Volleyball Championship for the fourth time overall and the first time since 2013 on November 20-22.

The top six teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the tournament with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes. The Colonials hold a record of 4-7 in A-10 Championship matches played at Smith Center, most recently going 1-1 in 2013.

The Smith Center previously hosted the event in 2013, 1991, 1989 and 1983.

GW will host the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship for the first time in program history in the spring of 2016 from May 11-14 at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon campus. The double-elimination tournament will feature the top six finishing teams in the 10-squad conference.

The GW Softball Field is undergoing a complete playing-surface renovation this summer and will feature a new synthetic turf outfield and state-of-the-art Hilltopper Infield Mix - a type of clay designed to regulate moisture. An inning-by-inning scoreboard will also be added in left-center field. All upgrades are slated to be completed by the start of the fall semester.

The Buff and Blue have been housed at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex since the program's inception in 2003. The Colonials have appeared in three A-10 championships, most recently making back-to-back appearances in 2012-13.

In April, the Atlantic 10 announced a multi-year media agreement with the American Sports Network that will bring the semifinals and finals of both the volleyball and softball championships to a national audience on American Sports Network.

Ticket information for both A-10 Championship events will be announced at a later time.
