University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Announces 2013-14 Schedule

Four NCAA Division II Tournament teams from a year ago, including the reigning NCAA Championship runner-up and three conference champions, highlight the University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team's 2013-14 schedule, released Thursday, October 17th.

The Firebirds, who were 10-18 (5-13 East Coast Conference) during a re-building year in 2012-13, will open the season at home in a non-conference tilt against Nyack on Saturday, November 9th. The Warriors are one of three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponents UDC will face in the first five games of the season.

After a week's rest, the Firebirds will visit Richmond, VA for an out of region game against the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Virginia Union on November 16th. Then they return home to face the reigning CACC champion, Holy Family on November 19th. The Tigers have appeared in the last 10 straight NCAA Division II Tournaments.

The road to the UDC women's basketball program's first ever ECC Championship begins on Saturday, November 23rd with an afternoon game at St. Thomas Aquinas. Then, when the team returns from the Thanksgiving holiday break, the Firebirds will host their third and final CACC opponent, Caldwell, on December 3rd. UDC will look to avenge last year's 77-64 season-opening loss to the Cougars at the ECC/CACC Challenge.

The reigning ECC runner-up, LIU Post comes to town on December 7th. The Pioneers have advanced to the NCAA Tournament the last three consecutive years. Following that game, the reigning CIAA Champion, Shaw, will visit on December 11th.

The Firebirds will end the 2013 calendar year with ECC home games against Mercy (December 14th) and NYIT (December 18th) before their winter holiday break. They return to action on January 4th to host the Northeast-10's American International in their final non-conference game of the season. That game also marks the last of a six-game home-stand.

The weekend of Jan. 10-12 will see the Firebirds complete their northwest NY swing, competing on the road against the two newest members of the ECC, Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen, respectively. They return home to host three straight ECC opponents: Molloy (January 15th), Queens (January 18th) and Bridgeport (January 22nd).

On January 25th, UDC will travel to Oakdale, NY to get its first crack at the two-time reigning ECC champion, Dowling. The Golden Lions, a No. 3 seed in last year's NCAA Division II Tournament, advanced all the way to the championship game before falling to Ashland.

The remaining schedule is as follows: January 30th at Mercy, February 1st vs. St. Thomas Aquinas, February 6th at LIU Post, February 8th at NYIT, February 14th vs. Daemen, February 16th vs. Roberts Wesleyan, February 19th at Queens, February 22nd at Molloy, February 26th vs. Dowling, March 1st at Bridgeport.
